Ask Us Anything on AtherStack 7

There aren’t really any HW upgrades that can be facilitated on older generations, at best maybe some cosmetic changes like mirrors. It’s not as easy as simply swapping an old mechanical or electrical component with the newest versions. You’d be hard pressed to find any automobile OEM capable of offering HW upgrades to newer or advanced components for non-cosmetic reasons anywhere. I know we usually are able to pull off things that other OEMs cannot tackle, but this is one area where we can’t give you a more positive response.

We don’t have exact details on the rollout of tire filling pumps, except to say it’s going to be a while before those are operational. But it will only come with new Grids and cannot be retrofitted to existing Grid points.

Would love to know what kind of information you’re looking for with a trip based efficiency meter or live efficiency meter.

In our experience and research with customers, it tended to cause more anxiety and fear rather than giving confidence. Our intent has always been to create a product that just works and that you don’t have to think about 10 times while using it. We found that people were obsessing over every tiny decimal change in real time efficiency, leading to a broken and difficult ride experience and thus not maximising the potential of the scooter to the fullest. While there is a sub-section of EV owners who would love to have these extra stats because it brings them joy, that same sentiment isn’t echoed by the wider pool of riders in the country.

Would love to understand how a real time/trip based efficiency meter would impact your riding so we can re-open this conversation internally.

The intent is to do whatever we can to make EVs as a category feel more mainstream. While using wh/km might be the technically correct + scientific definition of efficiency, it makes it extremely difficult for an average consumer to understand efficiency or to calculate how much power has been used, how many kms they are getting in a charging session, what is the avg. cost per km, etc. Not everyone wants to do these kinds of calculations every time they ride. It’s important and necessary to give EV users an easy way to compare range to mileage as they know it in an ICE vehicle, where it is calculated as km/litre. A unit of electricity is analogous to a litre of petrol in this case. We’re also seeing multiple other companies in India transition to this type of measurement unit for efficiency.

Would love to understand what additional benefits you see from having a wh/km efficiency tracker, as opposed to the current implementation.

We love bringing new capabilities to our riders, and we know many of you with Gen 3 scooters are excited about 'Magic Twist'. This new feature, however, is deeply integrated with the advanced hardware in our newest models. While software updates can do amazing things, they can't add new physical components. For this reason, 'Magic Twist' can not be enabled on Gen3 Scooters.

We are so glad you enjoyed the original theme and animations! We hear you, and we understand that many riders, like yourself, were fond of the old UI.

As the scooter’s interface evolved through Over-The-Air updates, we introduced the ‘Wings of Power’ animation to provide more useful, at-a-glance information. It instantly shows both the available power in your current ride mode and how much you’re using, helping you deeply engage with your ride.

We recognize that functionality is just one part of the experience, and your feedback about loving the old design is valuable. We are actively exploring how to incorporate this sentiment into future updates.

Thank you for asking about this. It's great that you're exploring the features of your Gen 3 scooter!

I’d like to make sure I understand the issue correctly. What you may have observed is a feature called ‘Coasting Regen,’ which is available to the Gen 3 model. It is designed to activate when you release the throttle, and you can indeed increase the braking effect slightly by twisting the throttle backward a little. This is the intended behaviour for your scooter, not a bug.

The stronger regenerative braking you may have heard of, known as ‘Magic Twist,’ requires different hardware found in our newer models. Due to these hardware limitations, Magic Twist cannot be supported on the Gen 3 platform.

Volume Controls on Switches - that's an excellent suggestion! We completely agree that volume controls on the handlebars are essential for convenience. We're excited to let you know that our team is already working on bringing this feature to you as soon as possible. It's a crucial update that will also seamlessly integrate with our Halo smart helmet and new voice command features.

We’re excited about our latest feature, “Infinite Cruise”, which is currently available only on the Ather 450 Apex. Some of our newest features, including this one, require unique hardware components and switches to work correctly and safely. We are exploring backward compatibility for ‘Infinite Cruise,’ but our number one rule is that we will never sacrifice safety or provide a subpar experience. For this reason, we can’t confirm a rollout for older models at this stage. We are aware of reports regarding dashboard lag. Our most recent OTA update wherein we enabled Touhscreen on Rizta Z was designed to fix the majority of these touchscreen response issues. Have you received the update on your Rizta Z yet?

Yes, our scooters equipped with the 7" touchscreen dashboard feature a Network Strength Indicator. The bars you see show a combined status of both the mobile network signal and the scooter's connectivity to our servers.

So I can help further, are you asking about our 450X/Rizta Z models (which have this screen) or the 450S/Rizta S models?

That's a really interesting suggestion! Our main goal has always been to simplify the riding experience, which is why we've invested so much in perfecting our 'True Range' algorithm to be as reliable and straightforward as possible. To help our team understand your perspective better, could you tell us more about how a direct energy efficiency number would be helpful for your daily rides? We're always keen to learn from our riders.

Also, good question about the temperatures! It’s awesome that you’re so interested in the tech behind the ride. While we designed the scooter to handle all the thermal management automatically for a super smooth experience, we’re genuinely curious to hear your thoughts. How would seeing that data improve your ride experience?

Also, thank you for the suggestion on the toggle betweek current ride and odo, we will explore ways to incorporate it in our future upgrades.

Yes, we are aware of the performance issues that some of our users can some times face with respect to Ather Maps powered by Google Maps. It’s a custom integration with Google Maps APIs and there is a lot that can be unlocked further. The team is exploring what next set of enhancements we can provide our customers when it comes to simplifying navigation and exploration convenience.

Would love to hear it from you as to what all experiences / performances upgrades you would like to see with Ather Maps on Dashboard - please do share!

Great to hear that you find AtherStack better - we aim to further enrich and improve it so as to ensure Ather owners have an absolutely convenient, safe and delightful ownership experience with their beloved Athers. As we saw with AtherStack 6 and AtherStack 7 - Ather will continue to introduce more magical and useful experiences in the coming years too. As a team we currently focus on quality of experiences than quantity and we are aware of the areas where we need to improve reliability.

There is an Android OS upgrade which we are working on and we should be able to announce it soon

This should unlock more experiences and features in the future and we are excited about the possibilities. It will be great if you can share as to what kind of features you would like to see on Ather vehicles in the future or if there are any everyday riding pain points we can address to improve your riding and ownership experience!

For our 450x Gen 5 and Apex 450, we have Magic Twist that provides regen along with braking experience. There are two levels of Magic Twist - Low and High which provide corresponding lower and higher regeneration.

In addition, there is of course coasting regen on these and most of the other Athers vehicles. Today, we don’t have selectable regen levels with Coasting but this is something which is definitely possible, however we need to evaluate trade offs with vehicle performance like deacceleration levels and other parameters. We will explore this for future AtherStack upgrades and definitely bring it to customers if it adds value to the riding experience!

Acknowledged, there have been a few changes to the external sound dynamics with Athers over the years that are a combination of changes to hardware (speakers) as well as internal vehicle software. We will definitely see what can be done to improve the sound experience further on existing and upcoming Athers! Thank you for the feedback.

Glad to know we have community members who still find value in one of the OG experiences Ather has built and pioneered and continue to use them. Auto Turn Off Indicators is powered via the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor. GPS doesn’t play a role here.

The IMU is able to detect the scooters tilt, motion, handlebar turns in different directions and helps us to automatically turn off indicators once our Auto Turn Off algorithm understands the vehicle has completed the turn and the handlebar is back in straight direction. There can be corner cases / edge cases where it may not work and we continuosly work to improve reliability of all AtherStack features. Please do share share examples of when it is not working for you.

If it possible for you to raise a ticket and videos (recorded by a pillion of course) of when Auto Indicators haven’t turned off automatically along with the information of ride date / time - our engineering team will definitely try to debug and identify how we can perfect it further.

You are correct - some of the new AtherStack Updates available with 450 Gen 5 - Magic Twist, Multi Mode Traction Control do require additional hardware upgrades in order to be functional along with software updates for Motor Controller. Due to these additional hardware changes required, currently it is not possible to roll out these experiences to Gen 3 customers.

We strive to make all new AtherStack experiences that are independent of hardware to be backward compatible and available to our existing owners.

As of now, we don’t have a provision of downgrading the software to a previous version. We are really sorry to hear that the maps performance is not as per expectation post the software upgrade - this should not be happening ideally. Can you please DM your vehicle details so that we can get it investigated and see what is the issue to fix it?

The idea that you have suggested of allowing users to choose as to what all features get activated based on personal preferences is an interesting one - however, today unlike a typical mobile OS / web OS - these features are not built as standalone applications that can be selectively downloaded / installed. The entire software update is a combined entity. Our engineering and QA teams test the entire suite together and ensure that the existing hardware is able to support existing and new features without any performance issues.
