Good to know you are looking at EVs for your next purchase!. Let me attempt to answer some of these questions.
Installation is not free. However, the Ather Dot is pretty easy to install and comes with a installation guide. If you are handy with a drill machine and know the basics of wiring up a socket, you can do this yourself. If you don’t have a drill or don’t want to bother with all this, get your local electrician to set it up. Its as simple as mounting a 15A socket (5A is sufficient) or you can pay Ather/Dealer 1800 (excl GST) for 5mtrs of wiring. Anything above that gets charged as per usage.
At 15-20 lakhs, the OEMs can bundle in the cost of data and no one would even know. For a 2W, it isn’t that easy.
All critical updates/bug fixes are free, irrespective of whether you are on a connect plan or not.
Ather does not use Android Auto/Apple CarPlay because there is a device dependancy. When you already have a android based dashboard not he scooter it makes more sense to use the native Google Maps implementation. The google maps on your phone/tablet is a free license for personal use. Any implementation of the same Google maps for Automotive purposes needs a paid licence. Hence the cost to use navigation on the scooter.
The 450/450+/450x were designed for city commutes, which means you are already have decent data connectivity in the operating area. To put in an offline maps would mean the need to keep it updated frequently as new roads are built, one ways get notified, roads are closed etc. A real time connected maps just makes more sense. What would be nice is to have the Traffic layer on the maps screen but unfortunately Google doesn’t support the traffic api implementation for 2W yet.
There is no OBD port, so you no chance of plugging in a bluetooth OBD dongle to collect/read data.
Again, The subscription isn’t mandatory. If you drive the same route or are familiar with the city then connect plans may not really be useful for you.
It’s ₹400 per quarter, not per month.
The connect plan doesnt just cover 3G/4G data plan costs. It also covers the cost of your Maps licence, the cost of storing and retrieving data from the Cloud and maintaining that data as well.
I just now renewed my car insurance and there was no provision for in built RSA or Puncture assistance. Unless you pay extra for these, insurance covers only accidental damage claims.
