Ather 450X Discussions

Vehicle is having a problem of wobbling whenever I go on speed breakers or pot holes. Other issues like breaking it skids, mirror, sudden rebooting and vehicle stops, lot of vibration. Now again I have sent the vehicle on Sunday and it is still in the service centre. Some how always better to go with the branded company like Bajaj, TVS etc…

@samitbanerji. The sticker shock is there, but I will reserve my comments until I see the full spec sheet, lease options, subscription plan benefits and a test ride off the X.

Current owners will feel the pinch, however for new markets this would be an exciting product.

I did not understand the point of giving the same hardware for the 2 variants (just different software configurations) of the 450X and charging different prices for that? Can anyone explain this? Or is PLUS variant just a decoy?
Basically why does the PRO cost more than the PLUS if both work on the exact same hardware and that too locally on the scooter. Like it’s not fetching the extra performance and range etc remotely from some server for charging extra for that service. Super confused!!

1.59 lakh for EV scooter with just 85km range is hard pill to swallow.

There are options to exit the subscription plan after 4 years. Does the infinite battery warranty still continue after exiting?

New markets means new cities? I would say for new cities its even worse, as they are canceling the production of 450. 450X plus with same specs as 450 will be available at much higher prices.

Bangalore customers are in good place. They have the option of choosing other options like Chetak, iQube and buy them outright without subscriptions.

Hi @diwakar.mrd , sorry to hear that.

How is the Ather’s customer service towards you. Are they providing any alternate vehicle for you to commute? Are they clear and transparent about the issues?

Do let us know, it will help prospective buyers and also you mutually I believe. Thanks in advance

@spg
Ather is not providing Infinite Battery warranty. It is only 3 years. It’s just a marketing stunt that they called the overpriced battery subscription or leasing as Infinite warranty.
Like someone mentioned in the forum here, rather than paying 96,000/- to Ather for 4 years. If you put that same amount of money in some fund, you might able to buy yourself definitely a couple of battery packs

Now Chetak is the way to go, My only concern with chetak is top speed and its looks Wish chetak could have managed to get the top speed at 80kmph it would have been better , Still a 1st Gen product from Bajaj i can understand that some thing might have stopped them to reach that speeds, everything else seems a vfm.

No need to come to the conclusion that media reviews are biased. None of those guys have knowledge about the Ather’s product more than the folks over here. Don’t bother about their reviews.

The Ather website reads “Degradation/performance of the battery shall be determined solely by Ather.”
Can you @abhishek.balaji run us through some info as to how company will respond to any performance downgrade, like as to what levels customer will get a new battery or will it be swapped with a serviced battery etc.

The monthly subscription cost of 450X for the Pro plan is so dangerously close to that of my car’s monthly running cost.

For a two wheeler, that too electric - not sure if I need to pay such a high recurring cost. Didn’t cancel my pre-order (still have hopes on Ather!), but giving a very serious think on whether 450X serves any meaning for my intended usage.

Pretty pertinent question right there.

All these days they had not given the standby vehicle and after lot of discussions and arguments now I got the standby vehicle on Sunday and still they are rectifying the problem

Some of the customer service executives are not aware what they talk and service people also who come for small rectification are not that much aware of the subject and if I ask any question they say need to check with service manager

Overall I see not specialised folks they have as per my experience

Thanks for sharing the information diwakar. Please bring out these problems more into the forum. So that it gets addressed.

@abhishek.balaji Any comments on these issues.

I think this subscription idea must have come from looking at revolt subscription amount of Rs 3999/- which was available in delhi…
But the have seriously surprised all those who had pre-booked…

The subscription thing has to end. I can’t even own a scooter after paying almost Upfront 2lacs.
Have to pay ather whether i am in US for months!! What an idea sirji. Hatsoff to the guy who prepared the pricing.

I used the TVS Teenz Electric since May 2008 (lead acid battery) and am now using the Ather 450 since May 2019. I see the Ather 450X Pro as superior to the Ather 450 on many important performance aspects and on par with it on all remaining aspects, except for the front to back almost equal weight distribution in the Ather 450. It is likely that most of the hardware issues that were faced in the Ather 450 over the last one year would have been resolved already in the Ather 450 Pro and some of the software issues will get resolved by the time it is released in Q3 2020.

It is very likely that the government will give a greater impetus to adoption of EVs from April 2020 through a higher subsidy that is linked to the motor rating. This subsidy will help the three players that have higher motor rating products - iCube, Chetak and Ather 450 that are all currently in the Rs. 1.15 lakh bracket bring their selling prices to Rs.1 lakh which seems to be the trigger price point for larger adoption of high performance EV two wheelers. The Delhi subsidy is already 14k higher than in the other states and it is likely that other states will try to match it.

In the case of Ather 450x Pro the post budget expected price fall of 14k from 159k will bring the price down to 145k plus 3k per year for service for those who booked the vehicle after the release yesterday. It is also very likely that the 3k plan mandatorily required for those who book after the release will be waived for the first year those who booked earlier with their invite code. Some of the higher subscription plans may possibly be waived for those who pay in full at an early date after booking it with the invite code. This is speculative for now, but it is already announced that invite code holders will be exclusively offered the limited-edition product - possibly the Ather 450X Pro in a different colour at a good price. This is likely to be during April to June 2020 with an exchange offer on their current Ather 450 – so that the new owners can give feedback on the forum for those who have booked the product after its release.

By April 2020 we will also have early feedback on the iCube and Chetak – both are larger and heavier vehicles than the Ather 450X and both are unlikely to practically give the high range they have claimed with a smaller battery and lower power motor. Also, both iCube and Chetak are going to sold and serviced by their large existing petrol vehicle dealers who will have no incentive to sell the EV over the better margin and higher service revenue petrol vehicles. Changing the back tyre with the motor inside is likely to be problematic for service on both the iCube and Chetak.

Some issues not addressed so far in Ather 450X such as no centre stand and no sidestep to climb on to pillion seat are possible design decisions by Ather that may have been ignored by iCube/Chetak. It is practically difficult to lift the heavy vehicle on to a centre stand and unless the centre stand has a wider spread it is very likely to topple over when it is shifted by a parking attendant. Also stepping high on an extended sidestep by a pillion rider can imbalance the heavy vehicle with a higher centre of gravity – both Chetak and iCube have this problem with a higher placed battery. It is better to step on the lower side feet holder area on Ather to climb in while the front rider is standing.

The practical range of 85 km is more than what anyone in any city will drive per day for normal work commute – it is not suitable for those who do deliveries and the vehicle is not targeted at those types of customers anyway. Those who are likely to go longer distances on a regular basis should ideally buy a far more comfortable bike like KTM Duke 125 which offers a better combination of fuel efficiency, safety and driving comfort than any scooter can. Higher range Ather will cost even more than the current price and will not be of additional value to most Ather customers.

Post April 2020 the price may be good for a superior performance Ather 450X compared to the current Ather 450. So, it makes sense to hold on to the pre-order and wait till you know the subsidy situation post April 2020. If a lower driving performance EV is acceptable then the Hero Optima at 60k may be a better and more proven option for now.
