Hello folks!

A question to tenants in apartments that have gotten the installation done already – if any.

Was there a need to get any permission from Bescom to draw the direct line from your meter but from the common meter room that apartments generally have? Did the apartment association insist that they cannot allow without permission from Bescom for this - possibly because it could later be an issue with bescom otherwise…?

No such requirement from my apartment complex association. Line drawn from apartment’s meter box.

Did they give you an option to opt for the mobile charging unit instead of the home charging point? I remember some discussions with them on this front in August 2018 when I booked it and they were saying that the home charging point cannot be swapped out for the portable unit and even the early birds need to buy it separately. It was either this or a socket. I am not sure if they changed this (not so logical) decision later.

Also, I would like to know your (and hopefully others can comment on this too) rationale behind going for this instead of the portable unit since I am having a hard time making up my mind. My heart says go for this but my head says go for the portable unit (after setting up the socket inside a lockable distribution box).

Listing out a few pros and cons which I can think of:
Fixed home charging point:
Pros: Looks, faster charging rate, better protection from electrical spikes and other disturbances (as per the folks at Ather), weather sealed, ease of plugging in/removing
Cons: Not portable, the looks and the green light can attract unwanted attention, many would still prefer to buy the additional portable unit anyway

Socket + portable unit (inside lockable distribution box):
Pros: Portable :), can be locked away inside the DB to stop people from messing it up, the socket can be used for other purposes (for e.g. vacuum cleaning of your car)
Cons: Slower charging, less electrical protection, not weather proof, need extra protection for it not to be stolen

Now the charging rate can either be a pro or a con. I personally prefer a slower charger which can be plugged in overnight. From what I have understood, the battery does heat up enough for the fan to kick in occasionally when charged from the stationary charger and heat being a battery killer, I would prefer a slower charging rate.

Hi, we had discussed this point in length sometime in October 2018… May be you can refer this thread. There are few other messages below that by me and Shreyas too.

Its not a portable unit but a charging cable with the scooter is what I know. For me, I have chosen the point right now as it will serve my daily use case of commuting to work and back. Apart from the above pros you have listed, it also provides a secure authentication for your 450/340 to use it. No one can use/misuse it as just another power point. And I just dig the looks of the point. Absolutely neat yet futuristic  Moreover if need arises, a charging cable can always be purchased later.

P.S. if the charging point does attract attention it might just help strike a conversation with people to get them onboard the Ather train and go green

Thought of sharing my experience on charging installation which was completed on last Saturday 9th Feb.

  • Team lead by Lokesh is very professional.
  • Though he was around in my area 30-45 min earlier than appointment time, he waited patiently to call me and called me just 5 min earlier than scheduled (He did the same for inspection too)
  • Very patient and understanding while I explained where and what I wanted.
  • As my house has already has current leakage detector, I did not want another RCCB. He too agreed but then he called his manager to take his permission (Ather saved nearly ₹2000/-)
  • They had complete tool set, everything was in order. You name it, they had everything and they used proper tools for all the activities.
  • Even the wire ends where they join to poles, they not only trimmed, twisted, but they used lug, crimp to make sure it is long lasting. No hatch patch work.
  • And this is what I liked the most and best. Before they leave, they made sure the site is clean and as it was. They picked up all cable skins, plastic packaging etc and carried witht them. I have never seen such clean work by anyone in India.
  • Though I offered coffee, he politely refused.

Kudoos to Lokesh and his team. Fantastic job.

How did you get the Ather Grid banner?

Had to pay 3.5K extra to get it. My apartment association does not allow drilling on wall or pillar.

This gives perfect clarity .This avoids drilling of pillars. I was looking for the solution like this.Is the cable dragged from the home meter ?.

Yes, Home meter
