I don’t understand why people think Ather is going to sell a product at minimum margins. Anyone following the company knows that it’s not going to happen.

All likelihood the Ather is going to have this manufactured at a 3rd party. I don’t believe it makes sense for them to invest in infra to build low volume helmets at that price point.

Its simple. You sell at minimum margins to make sales and float the product in the market so that people feel its not a product but a utility that they need… and later increase the price with version 2. If you initially keep your prices high for margins and profits its never going to sell. This is like in the history of every tech product that ever came. Actually in a way they did what i said at the community day… give the helmet at a discounted rate so that word of mouth spreads and the product floats… but sadly that number is too small at the moment to generate a word of mouth which convinces other to buy the helmet at 15k.

In this entire story of HALO I am worried about only two things.

  1. Likelihood of charging unit getting damaged in the event of fall

  2. Visor scratches (this is super concern for me because the visor is something you can’t get else where since it is specially designed. So firstly Ather doesn’t keep stock of those as accessories and secondly even if they keep it that is going to be super expensive.)

No. I raised a ticket with the customer support through mail. They said they are looking through it 3 days ago and no response since then.

I also wrote the merchsupport@atherenergy.com ID and no response. And CS is “checking”.

+++++ I am going to be furious if the visors are not easy to change (since they are developing a new mechanism) and if they don’t sell spares.

Can’t wait for the visors to cost 5k

I did not book it yet. I am waiting for the response on a query. I assume it to be pretty basic but yeah.

Any company that launches merchandise and official accessories will be expensive that those available in market , launch day discounts are a different thing and has nothing to do with making cost , Halo is expensive as it’s a Ather official smart helmet + Harmon certification + wireless tech + custom body , well opinion may differ person to person but my opinion is it’s ok for a company to charge that amount as today there is no premium product in the market that a normal person can’t afford , apple was only afforded by business person back in time and now everyone can afford it because of emi , apple phone also charges with local market chargers and you need not buy original apple charger to charge it soo it’s just a companies premium product for those who think I own a premium scooter so why not a premium helmet , just a matter of opinion person 2 person , I am interested in HALO and waiting for reviews once it’s in market , if I like the ease of use and sound quality then I would definitely go for it…

Actually This Halo has Good Features that most Intercom companies miss in this Budget

i.e Wireless Charging and Good Branded Speaker

Ather got Both of em

Also Asking Some Brand to Reduce Price is not a Good Thing. People buying Apple Products even if it is not worth the Price.

Ather >>>>>>> Apple

Okay, so a lot of discussion about the pricing and comparison to Apple. So let me give you some metrics and then you compare it with Apple yourself. Now the engineering is no doubt on par with what Apple is doing. I already said this is a beautiful piece of tech in my original post… but lets talk sales.

This is the number of Athers sold till date 2,37,000. Pic is from the community day event. Let’s take 2,40,000 for ease of calculation.

Now if the Halo Helmet was priced properly along with the tech it has, how many Ather owners out of these 2,40,000 would have got it? Half? 1/4th?

Let’s take 10%… which 24000 helmets… even better let’s take 1%… which is 2400 helmets… now Ather claims that the first 1000 pre orders will get the helmet for 13K… even today the website is selling it for 13K which means they still haven’t hit the 1000 mark. So why haven’t they hit 1000 mark ? (0.4% of total consumer base). They should have at least hit the 1000 mark if there was so much craze for the product right? Let’s say they have had less pre order (say 500) because of community day discounted buyers.

If I even take into consideration that 1000 people were at the community day and all of them got the helmet at 50% off… which was not the case frankly… but still, that makes it 1000 (community discounted buyers) + 500 (Pre order buyers buying at 13K) = 1500 halo helmets… which means they have not even sold to 1% of its users… why? two reasons… one the product hasn’t launched yet, two it isn’t priced properly. If such a well engineered product was priced properly people would have pre ordered like crazy. A consumer usually decides to buy a product based on value for money first and then the use case (most scenarios, exceptions can be made). Just ask all the people who are buying with community day discount. Most of them will tell you they don’t need one, they want one because of this steal deal pricing.

An argument can also be made that existing owners already have a helmet and don’t want one. Fair enough. But a new user will always look for a new helmet. A family person buying a rizta at least needs to buy two helmets. So their choice will be two Bits or two normal helmets. As for as the 450X which is targeted towards youngsters who like a sporty look, they are going to have a hard time to get a 15K helmet.

Now will a 15K helmet even sell to 10% of its consumers which is 24000 units till date. I don’t know but at this price it seems like a farcry. My best guess is it will struggle to even sell 5k - 8k units. A helmet is a utility, a new buyers first go to accessory but because of the price people will look at other options. I consider this as a missed opportunity from Ather because there is hardly such a finesse product like Halo in this segment. They could have dominated the market with the first movers advantage. Even done 10% + sales (around 30000 units).

Now if I give a simple run down on how products are priced… yes they do keep in mind cost recovery and all but ultimately whatever they price it, it is done to make sales. Simple. If the product doesn’t sell, then it doesn’t matter if you price it 15k or 30k or 50k. A very good example is Playstation 3, even after the success of PS2 all they had to do was release the next gen and sell like hot cakes. But it didn’t sell well because it was overpriced. People went to Xbox as that was more value for money despite the Playstation exclusives etc. Sony backtracked and went back to lower pricing for future generations.

Now, compare this whole thing with the Apple scenario and you will get your answer.

You do one Calculation,

Check Price of an ISI + DOT Certified Helmet and Intercom Price

Then You will Understand 14,999 is really a Value for Money Product :money_mouth_face::moneybag:
