Belt drive was chosen for the 450 as it reduces maintenance requirements significantly. Belt drives are already in use in Indian conditions in some of the high end performance bikes hence their reliability has already been proven. Higher noise is from the transmission system of which belt is a part of. Keeping the belt and discs clear of dust / dirt certainly would reduce the noise.
