One Year Old Ather Rizta Suddenly Dead: My Roadside Assistance Ordeal

My Rizta suddenly went completely dead and refused to start. The screen went entirely black. Charging the scooter and attempting a hard reboot did not work.

The scooter is just about one year old and has run only around 5000 kilometres, so the usage has been quite limited. Despite that, it simply died without any warning.

I called the roadside assistance helpline and was informed that towing the scooter to the nearest service centre would cost ₹2400 plus GST. The nearest service centre, Shaw Ather, is only about 6 km away. Paying ₹2832 for such a short distance did not feel reasonable.

I panicked and started searching for other ways to transport the scooter to the service centre. I contacted a few local towing operators but even they were quoting around ₹2000.

I then spoke to the service centre directly. They said they could send two people on a bike after two days who would tow the scooter manually using their feet.

I also tried arranging a local tempo, but lifting the scooter without a ramp was difficult and we did not have any labour available to help.

A friend suggested booking Porter with labour support. Initially they asked for ₹500 as chai pani in addition to the fare of around ₹1000, so I cancelled that option.

Eventually I found a three wheeler tempo driver on Porter with labour who agreed to transport the scooter for ₹550. I paid him ₹650 out of appreciation. In the end I was finally able to get the scooter to the service centre.

When I went to the service I was told it’s a PDU Issue

I hope Ather reviews the roadside assistance pricing and makes it more reasonable, especially for such short distance transport within the city.

PDU, power delivery unit is extremely common failure point in Ather. They cheaped out on using a local 48v to 12v converter. Rather then using their own design.

Ather should start reimburse the effected scooter. Like towing charges as this has become quite common. Hope their is a recalls.

6 months ago, I faced an issue with my Ather 450S charging port right after a fast charging session. The port stopped working completely.

I hadn’t opted for Ather’s roadside assistance, but thankfully I had taken RSA through my ICICI insurance (just ₹200). My hometown is about 49 km away from the nearest service center, but the insurance RSA covered everything — pickup, transport, and safe delivery.

The service team replaced the charging port under warranty, and I got the vehicle back without any hassle.

Based on my experience, I strongly recommend opting for RSA through your insurance provider — it’s very affordable and can save you a lot of stress in unexpected situations.

When you take insurance for next year don’t opt for no claim bonus, if you do the insurance company will reject all your future claims.

PDU isue in Rizta is very common .
