Bajaj Chetak

They seem to be having a good number of backlog of orders from Pune and Bangalore which they are currently serving. As per CNBC report, they have a substantial order book which they plan to fulfil the pre-existing orders by December. For the last 3 months, deliveries are increased (July - 120, Aug - 192, Sep - 288). They are currently serving the existing orders.

Hopefully, they increase the capacity rapidly, if they plan to enter multiple cities by end of the year.

They increased price of Chetak and they would keep calling me asking me whether i have money. But did not deliver the vehicle so I canceled it.

That’s pathetic. Looks like huge demand for EVs gone to their head.

Sad state of EV market in India despite huge support from central and many state governments.

So many moving parts in this business. New policies, energy sources, infrastructure, customer expectations, pricing slabs, inertia, paranoia, what not!

We will see only a slow adaptation, unless industry provides catchy products and deals that can go head on with what is running on roads now.

Ather has kept most if the above items in check and so is a good model to follow for others.

You know, technically even Ather had issues at first. There were waiting times of 7-8 months some times and maybe that’s what Bajaj is going through right now but expecting more from such an old and established brand.

I think Bajaj did not expect such a huge demand for Chetak. Also, pandemic caused disruptions to supply chains. One good thing is they are making Chetak available in multiple of their dealers in each city. They have the advantage of an established dealership network. They are currently selling Chetak only in their KTM showrooms but still, even those are available in plenty across the country.

Bajaj to set up a new manufacturing plant for Chetak with half a million vehicles per annum capacity. Potential locations for the new plant are Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad.

Currently, they are producing 300 vehicles per month at Chakan plant and available for sale only in Pune and Bangalore. They are ramping up production currently at the Chakan plant over the next few months and plant to start sales in 30 cities in the next 12 months.

Today, I cancelled Bajaj Chetak due to its unannouced and unprofessional price hike. This hike clear double standard by Bajaj. Those who booked Chetak in January out of hugh curiosity were made fool by this move. I’m pretty sure that most of the booking will get cancelled. For me there are many reason for not to cancel ,

  1. Those who booked scooter in January didn’t get any special offer discount whatsoever instead they got a tight slap of increased price
  2. They constantly changed promised date to deliver Urbane model first it was May then it became June, October and now dealer are saying that they don’t know when Urbane model becomes available instead they are trying to convey us to buy Premium model. I think Bajaj cleverly fooled us by showcasing less costly Urbane model at the time of launch but in real practise they are forcing Urbane customer to buy Premium model which I didn’t like in the first place.
  3. I am feeling disappointed with overall EV market in India. Now going back to old school petrol moped.
  4. Lastly, they are charging for Home charger for 10k which is basic need and without which scooter won’t work. Highly disappointed again.

What was the price when you booked? and the current new price?

The price for Urbane model was Rs 1,04,000 and now they are saying it will be 1,27,000 plus 10000 for Home charging so total will be around 1,37,000 onroad in Pune

I still can’t understand why would someone pick Chetak over Ather at this price

So ₹1,37,000 for the Urbane Vs ₹1,39,000 (ex Showroom) for the 450 plus.

I already see the value differentiation here.

It’s sad to see Bajaj not honoring the preorder prices and following the same traditional methods that are prevalent in 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler industries.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the price of the Urbane model is not 1,27,000. The on-road price for Urbane is actually, Rs 1,21,525. The on-road price for the Premium variant is Rs 1,26,552. I always wondered why they are charging 15,000 more for just the front disk brake and some color differences for the Premium variant over Urbane. Looks like Urbane model is for just marketing purposes with low pricing. With the Ather 450x pricing and huge demand for decent EVs, they are now increasing the prices for Ubrane to make it less value over Premium.

Regarding the home charging kit, only socket is now option and costs extra right? They are still providing the regular charging adapter which can be plugged into any 5A socket as per updated FAQ on the website (below screenshot). 10K for that branded socket is huge waste. Its better to just get a 10 A rated MCB as mentioned in of their FAQs. They themselves are encouraging to get 10A MCB in one of their FAQs. Looks like they are not interested in selling the charging kit.

Companies tend to get arrogant and ignore customer satisfaction when there is a huge demand than supply, but Bajaj should have honored these 2 commitments (initial pricing and charging kit) at least for the early customers in the 2 cities.

It’s very poor decision to increase the price of existing orders. People ordered would have ordered based on the price they saw on the day of booking.

Now increasing it retrospectively is not professional regardless of whether you are startup or biggie.

Doing it silently is even worse.

Moreover, cancellation is charged at 1000.

Non EV enthusiasts and people from tier 2 cities will need a brand value to buy. Will be hesitant to buy a brand which you never saw in TV, news or not bought widely in your circle.

That’s where this big brands will get advantage.

You are absolutely right. But I see Chetak brand is on the path which was already took by Tata Nano. Remember Nano was promised to be 1lakh family car but its price got well beyond that year by year and finally it become dead. Point here customers are very sensitive to cost of the product they get and if company like Bajaj is not keeping their promise then its becomes act betray and leaves customers with no choice but to get away from brand like Bajaj.

Please correct me if I am wrong. By the break up it seam to be no increase but the subsidy is not mentioned because they are not sure about the eligibility of individual customer.

Because subsidy is something central govt and state government give Chetak has nothing to deal with it.

And they are selling charger as a accessory and reduced that price from vehicle price.

That’s what my assumption based on their old and new breakup. But if they have sent a communication to preorder customers about price increase, then it means they have increased something.

It’s funny that people are arguing about Bajaj Chetak on Ather Forum. That’s the Ather experience.
