TPMS is not worth the money - Long term review

I purchased my TPMS along with my vehicle in December 2022. This review is based on my 1.5 years of experience using it.

First and foremost, the TPMS readings are unreliable. Bluetooth connectivity issues often lead to outdated readings displayed for days without any indication. This has resulted in several instances where I’ve assumed my tire pressure was correct, only to later discover that the displayed reading was stale. To refresh the readings, I usually have to restart/reset the scooter. In one particular incident, a puncture in my rear tire went unnoticed for days due to the TPMS displaying incorrect pressure.

Recently, my rear TPMS stopped working entirely. The service center diagnosed a hardware issue and recommended replacing the device. To make things worse, Ather only sells TPMS in pairs, forcing me to purchase a new set even if only one sensor is faulty.

Before I go to the replacement, I asked myself what is the point of having a TPMS when the readings are not reliable. You are left to manually monitor the readings and if you see it showing the same values for days then you need to start troubleshooting it. It is not a seamless experience which I would expect from Ather.

Ather team, if you’re reading this, I understand that no technology is perfect. However, the TPMS should be designed to handle common issues like Bluetooth connectivity problems. A simple notification indicating that the readings are stale would significantly improve the user experience. The existing “error” section in the settings menu could be used for this purpose. And who even thought selling the device only in pairs is a good idea?

For those considering purchasing a TPMS, I recommend investing in a portable tire inflator instead. Regular manual checks every week or two will provide a more reliable and cost-effective solution.

They updated the TPMS newer ones are available. Not sure what’s the T&C to get the newer ones under warranty

I am facing same rear tire TPMS issue and posted here in a separate thread already. This happened after updating to new stack.

Bad TPMS experiences can be linked with earlier TPMS manufacturer. Even I had experienced the same issue with stuck readings that were not real-time values. But since they launched the new Treel TPMS, the experience has been stellar on my Apex, and I also had my older TPMS on my Series 1 replaced under warranty with a Treel TPMS, which I got with my Apex. Both are awesome. Real-time values are reflected in both the app and the dashboard. One additional bonus benefit of TPMS is I don’t need to fill my tyres every week unlike with OEM tyre valves which require regular top ups.

I am also happy with TPMS on my 450x… Got it installed on Rizta too , though Rizta stack is not yet ready for TPMS.

I find it very convenient to have live tire pressure readings in front of me on dashboard. It has helped me multiple times in taking corrective actions in advance.

I do agree that its priced on higher side, but we pay for convenience.

Do you what was the warranty that was quoted to you? I asked them if they can replace under warranty but they denied saying it’s only one year warranty and will not be covered under warranty.

If it is a case of previous manufacturer issue, they should have recalled the old devices and replaced with new models right? The entire 1.5 years of using the TPMS, never once it worked consistently.

I agree, but only if you can rely on it. Most of the times the values used to be outdated and wouldn’t update unless I restart the scooter.

It is surprising to see that there is a newer model which solves these issues. Let me raise a support ticket and see what happens.

Unfortunately, they are right. They would have replaced it with newer treel TPMS under warranty if you were in warranty. Usual 1 year warranty from date of purchase.

tbh tpms is stupid. i was so keen on getting one but then i realised it will show me only the pressure and will not help me fill it. I bought a portablw tyre inflator for 3k and it shows me pressure and helps top it up too. I just need to do this every 3 days or sometimes every other week and its great

Well You may have this opinion but TPMS is not stupid. Tire pressure monitor and tire inflator are two different devices and they have different use cases. Not fair to compare them.

You are filling air every 3 days. How do you identify issues which can happen within 3 days like slow leak or puncture. Without TPMS you will only know about them when air pressure is reduced to very low levels. You can’t do much then. With TPMS you can take proactive actions and avoid yourself to be left stranded at add locations.

I can’t understand why he taught TPMS would help him to inflate tyres. Maybe he mis understood concept of it in first place. But post TPMS installation there is no need to fill air every week.

I’m thinking of getting TPMS installed in my 450x, Can someone tell what is the procedure and how the tyre replacement work after TPMS installation?

Goto SC you can purchase and get it installed there only.

Just to nearest SC and get TPMS installed. You need to get TPMS sensors moved to New tires if/when you replace tires.

Will that be done by SC or tyre shop?

SC will get it done.

In my experience, TPMS is a Value for Money Product and Helped me in the 176.2 KMs Range in a Single Charge Achievement :star_struck:

But how do you know if the values that are displayed on the dashboard are the current values. Most of the times those values are days old and never updates right?

I was tempted when to have TPMS but later chucked the idea totally, a year back when i got my 450x Ather TPMS had lacklusture availability and costly , Svc centers used to ask extra money to fit as they needed to get the tyres off the rim from outside  Not sure if changed now Several Connectivity issues reported on the forum also a reliable tyre inflater still 1k cheaper than TPMS was readily avaiable on amazon… Over the period of a year now i can judge motor whine which increases when the tyre pressure is low and weekly top ups are more that enough to avoid the need of so called TPMS by Ather
